Abstract: The paper examined the justification for mandatory teaching of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Nigerian Universities and the Law School. It also considered the evolution of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) as a concept designated to compliment litigation as a broad spectrum of amicable settlement mechanism which requires professional skills and knowledge for effective and efficient legal practice. The paper adopted the doctrinal research methodology whereby primary, secondary and tertiary materials were gathered and analysed. It was observed that though litigation had been the main means of resolving disputes, it has become unsuitable for a wide range of disputes, particularly those that relationship and time are of the essence. It was concluded that there is the need to gradually move away from litigation and to acquaint Nigerian lawyers with the skills and competence in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) for efficient and effective service delivery. It was recommended that the ADR which is presently an elective Course be upgraded to a core Course. This shall involve a comprehensive overtaking of the academic curricula of the Universities and the Law School.
