Abstract: Information needed for optimum performance of wood traditionally used as building materials in Nigeria were reviewed. Current status and availability of the species were highlighted in relation to progressive market shift to small diameter log (SOl) conversion. Local wood management and utilization would expectedly require change when builders and other wood users complain of losses due to previous management or whenever there is projected deficit in traditional wood supply as is currently experienced in Nigeria. Because Gmelina arborea now constitutes over 70% by volume of plantation trees in the country, technical data needed for performance rating of this species with the traditional ones were offered to encourage an informed shift to this currently available wood stock.
